Ephedra Banninated

Today the US banned Ephedra. This is the first herbal supplement to be banned. yay FDA. You're finally starting to deal with the herbal supplement scam that's been pissing me off for years. This is just the beginning I imagine. Yay now people will stop dying from herbal supplements that they take instead of real drugs. that 'if its natural it's not bad for you' myth will start to die,

Chip and Usman

Today I hung out with Chip. Chip was my high school buddy. I haven't seen him in several years. Chip was always pretty depressed, and I think he still is.

I found out that one of my other close friends is away visiting his internet girlfriend. It's a bit shocking. I didn't think he'd be the first of our nerd bunch to go off to meet his net girlfriend. He met her in a NIN forum and they hit it off once he found out she loves Mega Man.

The visit brought back so many memories of high school. I was depressed too then. It wasn't until summer of Junior year of college when I realized that life is what you make of it. The most important thing about having a good time is not what you're actually doing (work, concert, party, wandering about town) but instead how you feel about it. A little bit of positive energy goes a long way. I hope Chip realizes this soon.

St. Louis IRC

I went onto mIRC last night with i170. It was the same as always only with less chatter. We went into #St.Louis on Undernet and it was about as chatty as a relative's funeral. We of course started to spice it up by throwing insults back and fourth and advertising another fake new years party at the house of some person we don't like. (imagine 200 nerds just showing up at your place at 10pm new years eve... ). Anyway, we were quickly muffled with the +m operator (a way to shut annoying people up). It seems the megalomaniac nerds were happier with no chat in their chat room. Nothing has changed since the last time I went on in 1999.

Microserfs

MicroserfsI finished a book today called Microserfs. It's a great book and I recommend it to other nerds. Non-nerds probably won't glean much insight from it. As a result from my sudden expansion of knowledge, I've decided to either stop watching TV all together, or at least cut back on my TV intake significantly. It just seems like such a waste of time.

The Iran Quake of 2003

The new death tolls in Iran are 20,000 to 30,000 dead in the 6.5 quake that just hit them. That's just as strong as the quake that I felt in CA just a few days ago. The only difference here is that we had 2 deaths. That's a 10,000x higher rate of death. Gosh, I'm glad we have building codes.

Stinky Turkey

I bought a Turkey a week ago. My freezer sucks to it thawed in the freezer right away and began to stink. My roommate tossed it (since I'm out of town). He blamed Safeway for a bad turkey. He does not understand why more stuff in the freezer requires more power to keep cold. I attempted to explain the basics of thermodynamics and entropy to him. He was not pleased.

Xmas in St. Louis

So now I'm back in St. Louis for xmas. It has already started. Last night we opened gifts for our immediate family. It went quite well this year. Everyone stayed in good moods. The rest is going to be tricky though. Tonight we will continue on to mass at 5, then my maternal grandparents for xmas eve, which will go until 2am or so, followed by quick sleep and then xmas day brunch with my maternal grandparents. After that we move on to my visiting my paternal grandmother and then it's over!

Someday when I'm old and have kids, I don't think I'll do marathon extended family stuff. Especially the same family two days in a row. Maybe I'll alternate sides each year, unless my wife really hates her parents then we never have to see them.

Bonehead COENs

SCU OMIS, CS, and COEN grads are mostly boneheads.... Sorry guys, but it's true in general I've decided.

I've been promoted at work and asked to find a replacement. I have already run out of smart COEN friends (with the exception of a couple) because I gave them all to the QA department already. Because of this, I'm hunting for new people in some random places. I'm getting some bites, but they are not going very well. I ask everyone one simple technical question. This question is about the most fundamental concept to OO programming. This question is:

What is the difference between an Object and a Class.

The answer is of course that an Object is an instantiation of a Class (this may not seem obvious to non-programmers, but its impossible to program OO languages without knowing this).

*shakes head* Their graduating (somehow) really makes me feel less good about my accomplishment of graduating.

Grades

I got my grades for fall quarter. They annoy me... A 3.48 isn't that bad, but I was expecting an A in capstone and was given an A- instead. The other members of my group were given As, which is odd because I did much more work than two of them. Now I have to decide to fight over .3 (aka the principal since .3 makes no difference to my GPA), or to let it go.

Any suggestions?

Earthquake

Hey everyone. I'm back.

Yay an earthquake. How exciting. My building shook but it felt like a 4 to me. Turns out it was about 22 times stronger than that. It was a 6.5 down in San Simeon near the Hirst Castle. Everything is happy here, but I bet Hirst Castle is in bad shape.
