ahh the joys of drinking at work :)

AA is for quitters!

Goodbye Whitey

So I'm at work. It's 8pm, and I got in at 8AM. I have to arrive at 7am tomorrow. Looks like another 70 to 80 hour week.

It's funny how hard a person will work when they're on commission as I now am.

Anyway, I'm going to have a few brakes. I'll be sure to stop for poker night and my weekend hike. Anyone want to join me for either? This poker night is the last poker night for one of my long time poker night buddies, Whitey. He's moving to the east coast so we need a replacement. Also, the hike group seems to be growing. I have 2 yeses and 2 maybes for this weekend. We're probably going to some hill in the San Jose area (perhaps Castle Rock State Park) and hiking a few miles. Come and join us! it's fun!

Back to work....

Another Hike and Re:Meridian 59

a couple things happened this weekend...

the good news: my 5 mile jogs up/down 1000ft hills no longer make me sore. I'll be in good shape in no time! Today I saw one of the most amazing natural features that I've ever seen. I jog-hiked through the forest and saw different patches of different species which were all pretty much uniform. That is until I came upon one grove of redwoods. Perched on the top of a small hill along the hiking path was the largest tree stump I've ever seen. Admist a whole forest of trees under 4' in diameter was one enormous tree trunk.

The trunk was only 1/3 of the original beast of a tree. Its charred remains stood nearly 10' tall and if the tree was nearly circular in its life, the whole trunk would have been over 30' across. Based on the scaring of the remaining trunk and the way is was burnt, I believe it was downed by the fires resulting from a lightning strike. I have no idea how long ago this tree stood, and how long it stood there before, but it must have been amazing. I can only wonder as to what caused this one tree to flourish and stand so high above its siblings in this forest so many years ago.

the strange news: I played that MMORPG for a few days that i mentioned in my previous blog. It seemed to be putting along and I was getting my nostalgia dose that I needed. I ended up in the guild (club) of the old players called the Legacy. Since we know the game, and apparently they have no jobs, we ended up as the strongest players in the game by a very very significant margin. I was not included in this list but they let me hang with them just the same.

It was fun, although I was getting bored. In one of my bored conversations I joked that we should kill off the only other guild on the trial server and then slaughter all the newbies. They took this to heart and killed almost everyone.

The weird part starts here. The people we killed were very very sad. Most of them quit the game and some seemed on the verge of tears. At first i felt sorry that i was responsible for their sadness, then I felt pity for nerdiness and dependence on the video game going well for their happiness. Later I chatted with my guild-mates a bit about the events of the day. They made me feel even more pity for they were almost getting off on the saddens they had induced upon the other guild.

I think I remember why I quit before.

A Hike and Meridian 59

So I hiked / jogged about 5 miles on Saturday. As a result all of Saturday night and Sunday I was REALLY sore. My whole body hurt. Especially my head, which I managed to clip a tree with (my right eye fails me again). I'm still hurting but I managed to stay occupied.

One thing I did was take a trip down the nostalgia road. Back in 1996 to 1998 I played a game on the net called Meridian 59. It was the first of its kind: a 3d MMORPG. In normal terms it was the great grandfather of Everquest. It was graphically crude, plagued with bugs, and time consuming to play, but I enjoyed it at the time. Lacking anything else better to do, (and combined with a minor case of depression) I played a lot. I met lots of interesting people. Young people like myself, old people about as mature as I was, etc.

Anyway, I found out during my brief period of physical immobility that the game is back online. I checked it out, of course. The nostalgia coursed through my veins. It's funny that times seem better when we look back upon them.

After a few hours of playing and a bit of poking around the message boards, I realized that I'm not alone. Almost every single player I knew back in the day (other than the one that died of cancer) returned at almost the same time. They've all been peeking at whats up in the last 2 or 3 weeks. Weird eh?

anyway the nostalgia is almost over :) we'll see if i end up playing again (or getting bored)
